About this deal

Stop sanding if your dog shows sensitivity, as this is an even clearer indication that the nail is finished. The PawControl comes with a transparent nail guard that surrounds the rotor, helping you make sure you grind the nails at a 45-degree angle without sanding away too much, preventing you from accidentally injuring the sensitive "quick" inside your dog's nail. I am absolutely ecstatic hearing that things are going well, just so happy for you to finally have a good solution. Because you will be using this tool once or twice a week for the rest of your dog’s life, it is critical for both you and your dog that there is no fear or force involved. Once the nails on the foot are short enough, I then smooth in a circular motion the sides of the nail.

If you'd like to more thoroughly wash the metal attachments on your PawControl, first detach them from the device. By ending the pet nail grooming session on a high note, your dog may even start the next one with a little less trepidation. But I am flabbergasted that you got 1) a welsh to lay on his back and let you hold his paws 2) how much he loves his nails groomed! While the collet nut is grippy enough to loosen and tighten by hand, Dremel also includes a wrench that can help you loosen or tighten it. The PawControl is also a bit more powerful than the AA-powered grinders we tested, which makes for quicker work but also causes nails to heat up more quickly.

When I start the nails, I am just touching the Dremel really, so either direction is fine as long as you aren’t putting pressure.

Some dog owners might also appreciate that it comes with a plastic sheath that fits around the grinding bit to catch the dust from the dog’s nails. If you don’t see a little white dot, but you get too close to the quick, your dog will lightly flinch. Once it’s all gone smooth and there’s no abrasive material left, it’s time to swap it for a new one. To charge before your first use, first plug the included USB cord into both the plug power adapter and the Micro USB port on the PawControl (it's beneath a rubber cover on the bottom of the grinder). If you are nervous about grinding your dog’s nails down too much, a focused headlamp will be an invaluable tool for Dremeling — and for walking your dog at night!

In our testing, we preferred to remove the sheath for maximum maneuverability, but if your dog sits still, the tidiness it promotes is a solid bonus.

Clippers are the fastest way to get your dog’s nails to a safe length, but wielding them requires a strong, steady hand, and that isn’t always easy when your dog is jerking its foot away. Or it may result in accidentally hitting the nail quick (the center of the nail, packed with nerves and blood) if pet owners aren’t careful.

For more detailed instructions, you can consult the full user manual, which is available online and contains helpful diagrams. The Oster Gentle Paws Nail Grinder matches the Dremel PawControl 7760-PGK’s power and efficiency, but its high setting is a bit louder than the Dremel’s, and it runs on four AA batteries (not included) instead of a rechargeable battery pack. We haven’t tested this attachment kit yet, but it does come with the same nail guard, grooming discs, and bands as our Dremel PawControl pick. Both models offer “extras” that add absolutely nothing of value, such as a selection of six identical grinding pads that require an ungainly plastic socket to fit into the main body—a more complicated setup than on most other grinders. As a general rule, it’s enough to grind away the pointed tip until the nail looks relatively straight. You can use your household Dremel rotary tool to groom your dog’s nails, but we don’t suggest it for everyone. Anything RPM lower than 10,000 RPM will be too slow, and anything higher than 15,000 is TOO HOT and will cause too much heat to generate as you Dremel. A sure indicator of when to stop is when you begin to see a little white dot in the center of the tip of the nail.
