About this deal

Paul: Your status and legacy amongst 2000AD artists is quite obvious, but could I ask how you first came to be published by Tharg?

Bolland's covers over the next 30-plus issues laid the visual groundwork for the character, and saw Bolland illustrate up to and including the centennial issue No.One of the first things I did in planning the book was to compile a checklist of his 2000 AD and Dredd-related work to see exactly how much of it there was. Rather than get bogged down in a mass of communications, I preferred to send out enquiries in batches, so I was never chasing more than 10 collectors at any one time. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Bolland's covers adorn the whole second and third volumes of Grant Morrison's The Invisibles [84] and his depictions of the main characters are widely reprinted as the definitive images, despite them all having been realised by other artists – and often drawn by several before Bolland entered the picture.

I'd been working for DC for a few years, and they had a fairly tolerant attitude to my slow pace of work. At a time when (latest news) characters are gender neutral or polyamorous I always saw the Joker as not entirely heterosexual.Multiply that by 100, since few collectors owned more than a single page of Brian’s art, and you’ll get some idea of the scale of the project. y]ou really have to be constantly thinking of ways that the image on the cover will intrigue and lure in the potential punter.
